What Is S.T.E.M.?
S.T.E.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. “When students are engaged in hands-on STEM experiences, they build confidence, grow their knowledge and develop habits of learning. When adults coach these students, they encourage them to try, fail, and try again, while connecting STEM concepts to real-world examples.” (FIRST Lego League)
In South Carolina alone there are over 300 teams. Internationally, there are over 40,000 teams of youth involved in the FIRST robotics program. There is over $80 million in college scholarships available to FIRST participants.
Due West Robotics currently participates in three competitive programs (Jr.FLL for ages 6-9, FLL for ages 9-14, FTC for ages 13-18, and FRC for ages 15-18). We also field a competitive TARC (rocketry) team for 7th-12th graders. Non-competitive “clubs” include Game Developers Club (13-18), Maker Club (13-18), and Aerospace Club (10-18). Aerospace club combines drones and rocketry.
